6. Landmark Judgments That Changed India by Ashok K. Ganguly

This is the best judgement listicle book on Indian law. Though, I must preface by mentioning that the intended audience of the book is people already familiar with the judgments. Ganguly J. doesn’t explain the facts/analysis of the judgement as a whole; rather, his emphasis is on (i) arguing why that judgment is a landmark; and (ii) his critique, when relevant, of the judgement. His analysis and selection of cases is fantastic, though I feel (respectfully, of course) his criticism of TMA Pai is flawed. Books every law student should read

10. The Rebel: A Biography of Ram Jethmalani

The book is well written and systematically laid out. I have even had the opportunity to read the ‘Authorized Biography’ by Nalini Gera which is again a book on the life of Ram Jethmalani (RJM). Compared to that book this book stands out for its different approach to the life of the able lawyer. The story through narration of facts travels through eyes of various other members of his family and friends that one would miss out in the previous book. Books for law students

Overall the book is a more simplified and less analytic narration of facts and events that took place in Sh. Jethmalani’s life. One can benefit from the personal touch brought about by author by providing what Mr. Jethmalani himself thought and experienced during those special moments of his life. Lastly, there is already dearth of material available on the life of the great lawyer. One can only learn more about him by attending his lectures and seminars and of course read this book. Over all a good book and could be read jointly with the Authorized Biography by Ms. Nalini Gera to get a complete glance on the life of India’s finest lawyer.

11. Legal Eagles: Stories of the Top Seven Indian Lawyers by Indu Bhan

There are biographies of freedom fighters, famous politicians, national leaders and scientists. But briefs or biographies of lawyers, that to who are contemporaries are not available. These briefs on biographies on practising lawyers will sure inspire the young and aspiring lawyers. For a common reader it gives insight what is a legal profession and how one becomes a professional in Law.

I liked the style of narration and keeping the biography as brief and touching upon land mark judgements and winning strokes. Yes the editors did a good job, making first book of an author a success. I enjoyed reading it and recommend to all the young who aspire to be professionals in their life. one of the Best books for law students

12. 10 Judgements That Changed India by Zia Mody

Zia Moody eruditely articulates the 10 judgments that changed India by underscoring both dovish and hawkish approach taken by the judiciary. It would be kosher to call these 10 judgments- from Keshwananda Bharti’s Basic Structure Doctrine to Aruna Shanbaug’s Euthanasia- the kernel of the ever-evolving jurisprudence in India. Best books for law students

The book’s eloquent style of encapsulating India’s legal system in layman’s term deserves plaudits. So does our judiciary- for upholding the rule of law and for protecting the constitution from the imperious fiat of the government. The book, in an acerbic style, tells that “woe betide a democracy which refuses to learn the lesson of history”. A supine justice delivery system is no system. Judiciary is required to adopt a higher standard of rectitude if it wants to remain the apostle of Justice which is free and fair.

16. Bleak House by Charles Dickens

This book gives a good message and is beautiful in parts. The relationships and the stories are all dreamlike and surreal. If for the tendency of Dickens to use long, winding sentences and the repetitive theme of the Chancery cases, this novel would have been much more enjoyable.

17. The Trial by Franz Kafka

This book is terrifying! It’s terrifying because it involves a monster which is well-known to us all.

An unsettling feeling comes over you because things look and sound and feel real but something doesn’t fit with your usual paradigm of reality. The main character, Josef K., spends his time trying to work out his own trial, which he doesn’t understand, or even know what he did to deserve it. He seeks a solution, only to discover corruption in the system. He learns what it will take to survive. It couldn’t have been written with more precision and ingenuity, had it been written in our age of cruel bureaucracy. A splendid and unshakeable proof of Kafka’s genius.

18. The Firm by John Grisham

This was the book which made John Grisham an overnight bestselling author, and I can see why. The Tom Cruise starrer movie based on the book may be more famous than the book it based on, but I seriously recommend reading the book as well, preferably before watching the movie. Brilliant characterization supplemented by a thrilling and fast paced plot. Entirely plausible sequences. If you haven’t read John Grisham before, start with this title. It is definitely worth the money, and more.
